A dramatic Baroque etching by Louis de Deyster, depicting the crucifixion with Mary Magdalene in a moment of intense grief.
This etching by the Flemish artist Louis de Deyster depicts the crucifixion of Christ, with Mary Magdalene positioned at the base of the cross. Deyster, a painter and etcher from Bruges, spent significant time in Italy, a period that informed his dramatic approach to composition and light. His work often reflects the influence of the Italian Baroque, particularly in the way he handles the emotional weight of religious subjects.
The composition is structured around the verticality of the cross, which anchors the scene. Mary Magdalene is shown in a posture of grief, her arms wrapped around the wooden beam. The artist uses dense cross-hatching to build shadow and volume, creating a sense of atmospheric depth. To the left, figures are gathered on a rocky outcrop, their presence adding to the narrative tension. In the distance, a city silhouette is visible, providing a sense of scale and place. The sky is filled with turbulent clouds, and a celestial body, likely representing an eclipse, hangs above, adding a sombre, supernatural quality to the event.
Deyster’s technique demonstrates a mastery of the etching needle. He employs varied line weights to define the musculature of the figure of Christ and the textures of the landscape. The skull and bone placed in the foreground serve as traditional memento mori symbols, reminding the viewer of the transient nature of life. This print is a fine example of the devotional art produced in the Southern Netherlands during the late seventeenth century. It captures a moment of intense personal sorrow, rendered with the technical precision characteristic of Deyster's graphic output. The work remains a clear representation of the period's interest in combining theological narrative with the dramatic visual language of the Baroque era.
