A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Zacharias Dolendo, after a design by Karel van Mander, depicting the trial of Christ.
This engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicts the biblical scene of Christ appearing before the high priest Caiaphas. Dolendo, a Dutch engraver active in the late sixteenth century, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The composition follows a design by Karel van Mander, as indicated by the inscription 'Mandere inven' at the base of the print. The work is published by Jacob de Gheyn II, a figure of significant influence in the Dutch print trade.
The scene is set within a structured architectural space. Christ stands centrally, his hands bound, surrounded by soldiers in contemporary armour. To the right, Caiaphas sits upon an elevated throne, surrounded by elders and advisors. The figures are rendered with a focus on dramatic posture and expressive gesture, typical of the Mannerist style. The use of cross-hatching and fine line work creates depth and texture, particularly in the drapery of the robes and the metallic surfaces of the soldiers' gear.
Dolendo employs a clear hierarchy of space. The foreground figures occupy a defined stage, while the background architecture provides a sense of enclosure. The lighting is managed through the density of the engraved lines, directing the viewer's eye toward the interaction between the central figures. This print reflects the interest in narrative clarity and technical mastery that defined the output of Dutch printmakers during this era. The inclusion of the 'I. Gheyn exc.' mark confirms its place within the broader distribution networks of the time, where designs by prominent painters were translated into prints for a wider audience. The work remains a clear example of the collaborative nature of print production in the Netherlands at the close of the sixteenth century.
