A detailed circular engraving by Zacharias Dolendo, depicting Christ as Salvator Mundi with the orb and cross, based on a design by Jacob de Gheyn II.
This circular engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicts Christ as the Salvator Mundi, or Saviour of the World. The composition follows a traditional iconographic format, presenting Christ in a frontal pose with his right hand raised in a gesture of benediction. In his left hand, he supports an orb surmounted by a cross, a symbol of his dominion over the earth. The Latin inscription, 'EGO SVM VIA VERITAS ET VITA' (I am the way, the truth, and the life), encircles the figure, framing the subject within a circular border.
Dolendo, a Dutch engraver active during the late sixteenth century, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin. The work exhibits the characteristic linear style of the period, utilising varied hatching patterns to define the folds of the drapery and the contours of the face. The background features radiating lines that suggest a divine light emanating from behind the figure, creating a sense of depth despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium. The collaboration noted in the lower margin, 'J. de Gheyn in. et ex.' (Jacob de Gheyn II, inventor and publisher), indicates the involvement of the prominent Dutch artist Jacob de Gheyn II, who provided the design for this print.
This engraving reflects the stylistic tendencies of Northern Mannerism, where artists balanced naturalistic observation with a refined, graphic approach to form. The attention to detail in the hair, the texture of the robes, and the reflective surface of the orb demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship expected in Dutch printmaking of the era. This piece serves as a clear example of the collaborative relationship between designers and engravers in the Netherlands during the late Renaissance, where such prints were produced for a growing market of collectors and religious devotees.
