A detailed seventeenth-century engraving of King Charles I by Dutch master Jonas Suyderhoef, featuring an ornate decorative border.
This engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef depicts King Charles I of England, based on the portraiture of Anthony van Dyck. Suyderhoef, a master of the Dutch school of engraving, demonstrates his technical precision through the varied textures of the monarch's attire and the elaborate surrounding frame. The portrait captures the King in his characteristic attire, featuring a stiff ruff and the Order of the Garter, reflecting the formal court style of the period.
The composition is framed by a heavy, ornate cartouche adorned with swags of fruit and grain, a common motif in seventeenth-century printmaking that adds a sense of abundance and formality to the royal subject. Below the portrait, a decorative tablet contains the Latin inscription identifying the monarch as King of Great Britain, France, Scotland, and Ireland. The engraving technique employs fine cross-hatching to model the facial features and the soft curls of the hair, contrasting with the deeper, more robust lines used to define the decorative border.
Suyderhoef was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil portraits into the medium of engraving. By carefully managing the density of his lines, he creates a sense of volume and depth within the oval frame. This work provides a clear example of how European royalty utilised print media to disseminate their image across the continent. The print remains a study in the formal portrait conventions of the mid-seventeenth century, documenting both the physical appearance of the monarch and the aesthetic preferences of the era.
