Descripción
A 1933 lithograph by M.C. Escher depicting the rock-carved dwellings near Sperlinga, Sicily, through a study of light, shadow, and geological texture.
During his extended residence in Italy, M.C. Escher frequently travelled through the rural regions of the south, documenting the unique vernacular architecture he encountered. This lithograph, produced in 1933, captures the troglodytic dwellings near the town of Sperlinga in Sicily. Escher was drawn to these structures, where human habitation was carved directly into the soft sandstone rock face.
The composition relies on a stark contrast between the deep, cavernous shadows and the bright, sun-drenched openings of the dwellings. Escher employs a dense, stippled technique to render the texture of the stone, creating a sense of weight and geological permanence. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to look into the dark recesses of the caves while observing the weathered exterior surfaces. Unlike his later, more mathematical works, this piece reflects his early interest in the physical reality of the Mediterranean environment.
The print demonstrates his technical control over the lithographic medium, particularly in his ability to manage tonal transitions within a monochromatic palette. The irregular shapes of the cave entrances create a rhythmic pattern across the rock face, suggesting a natural integration between the built environment and the geological formation. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, Escher transforms a utilitarian site into a study of form and texture. This work remains a clear example of his observational period, prior to his shift toward the impossible geometries and tessellations that defined his later career. It provides a quiet, grounded perspective on a specific historical site, documenting a way of life that was already becoming rare by the early twentieth century.
