A delicate graphite and wash study of the Burg Maus on the Rhine by British artist Samuel Prout, capturing the architectural character of the site.
This drawing by Samuel Prout captures the Burg Maus, a medieval fortification situated on the banks of the Rhine. Prout, a British watercolourist and draughtsman, travelled extensively across the Continent during the early nineteenth century. His work often focused on the architectural character of European towns and ruins, documenting the picturesque qualities of sites along the Rhine and in Italy.
The composition employs a light, airy touch, typical of Prout's preparatory sketches. He uses graphite to define the contours of the castle perched on the hillside, while subtle washes suggest the atmospheric depth of the mountainous backdrop. The village at the base of the slope provides a sense of scale, with the church tower acting as a vertical anchor against the sloping terrain. The inclusion of small boats on the water indicates the importance of the river as a transport route for travellers during this period.
Prout was known for his ability to render architectural detail with precision, yet he maintained a sense of spontaneity in his sketches. This work reflects the nineteenth-century interest in the history of the Rhine valley, a region that attracted many artists and writers seeking to document the remnants of the medieval past. The drawing remains a clear example of the topographical tradition, where the artist acts as both observer and recorder of the physical environment. By focusing on the interplay between the man-made structures and the natural topography, Prout creates a balanced view of the site. The work is devoid of excessive ornamentation, relying instead on the clarity of line and the soft application of tone to convey the character of the location.
