An evocative illustration by Edmund Dulac from his 1909 edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, featuring a figure descending stone steps at dusk.
This illustration by Edmund Dulac was created for the 1909 edition of Edward FitzGerald's translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Dulac, a central figure in the early twentieth-century British gift-book market, produced a series of watercolours for this publication that defined his reputation as a master of atmospheric, Orientalist-inspired fantasy.
The composition depicts a female figure carrying a vessel, descending stone steps beneath a vine-covered trellis. Dulac employs a muted, earthy palette, relying on soft purples, ochres, and sage greens to evoke the twilight setting described in the poem. His technique combines precise, calligraphic ink outlines with delicate watercolour washes, a method that allowed for the reproduction of fine detail in the printed volumes of the era. The figure's attire and the architectural elements suggest a romanticised, historical interpretation of Persian life, a common stylistic choice among illustrators of the period who sought to transport readers to exoticised locales.
Dulac's work is characterised by a sense of stillness and poise. The figure is captured in a moment of quiet movement, her gaze directed downward as she navigates the steps. The vine, rendered with sinuous, organic lines, frames the scene and provides a structural balance to the verticality of the woman. This print captures the specific aesthetic of the Edwardian era, where the marriage of poetry and visual art was a primary focus for publishers and collectors alike. The work remains a representative example of the high technical standards maintained by illustrators during this period, demonstrating a careful balance between decorative pattern and narrative clarity.
