Descripción
A detailed watercolour of the medieval timber-framed buildings in Hereford, painted by David Cox around 1815 before their demolition.
David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and the English watercolour movement. This work depicts Butcher's Row in Hereford, a group of medieval timber-framed buildings that once occupied the centre of the city. Cox painted this scene around 1815, shortly after moving to the area to take up a teaching post. He captured the architectural character of the street before its demolition in 1837 to make way for city improvements.
The composition is dominated by the jettied upper floors of the timber buildings on the left and centre. Cox uses a warm palette of ochre and sienna tones to suggest the glow of a setting sun. In the foreground, various figures engage in daily commerce. A man rolls a large wooden barrel while dogs wander the cobbled street. To the left, a butcher's shop is visible with carcasses hanging outside, providing a literal reference to the street name. A horse-drawn cart and several figures in period dress occupy the middle ground, adding a sense of scale to the narrow thoroughfare.
The handling of the watercolour is characteristic of Cox's earlier style. He employs precise draughtsmanship for the timber frames while allowing the sky and background to remain soft. The spire of Hereford Cathedral rises in the distance, providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal sprawl of the market buildings. On the right, a more modern brick building provides a visual contrast to the ancient wood buildings opposite. This painting is a topographical record of a lost Hereford landmark, rendered with the atmospheric sensitivity that defined Cox's later reputation. The work demonstrates his ability to blend architectural accuracy with the changing effects of light and weather.
