Description

A classic 1962 Pop Art work by Roy Lichtenstein, featuring a pilot in combat rendered with bold lines and Ben-Day dots.

Brattata is a characteristic example of Roy Lichtenstein's engagement with the visual language of mid-century American comic books. Produced in 1962, the work captures a high-tension moment of aerial combat, focusing on the pilot's intense gaze as he tracks his target. Lichtenstein employs his signature aesthetic, which includes bold black outlines, a limited primary colour palette, and the use of Ben-Day dots to simulate the mechanical printing process of mass-produced media.

The composition is tightly framed, mirroring the panel structure of a comic strip. The inclusion of a speech bubble and the onomatopoeic text 'BRATTATA' serves to heighten the narrative urgency of the scene. By isolating this single frame from its original context, Lichtenstein removes the sequential storytelling of the comic, forcing the viewer to confront the image as a static, formal object. The pilot's face, rendered with stark shadows and sweat, conveys a sense of clinical detachment despite the violent nature of the subject matter.

Lichtenstein's practice during this period involved a meticulous process of selection and modification. He would often project a source image onto a canvas, trace the outlines, and then apply paint by hand. This method allowed him to mimic the appearance of commercial reproduction while maintaining the status of a fine art painting. The work functions as a commentary on the consumption of imagery, transforming the ephemeral nature of pulp fiction into a permanent, large-scale visual statement. The stark contrast between the mechanical style and the human drama of the pilot creates a tension that is central to the Pop Art movement. Through this approach, Lichtenstein examines how graphic design and popular culture shape the perception of reality, war, and heroism in the post-war era.

Artist Biography

Roy Lichtenstein

Lichtenstein painted a Mickey Mouse for his children and one of them said 'I bet you can't paint as good as that.' He took the challenge literally. By 1961 he was making paintings that looked like enlarged comic book panels: thick black outlines, flat primary colours, Ben-Day dots visible as if through a printer's magnifying glass. The art world had no idea what to make of them.

He was not young when this happened. He was thirty-eight, teaching art at Rutgers University, and had spent the previous decade painting Abstract Expressionist canvases that looked like everyone else's. The comic paintings were a deliberate rejection of the idea that art had to show the artist's inner emotional state. They showed Donald Duck instead.

Leo Castelli gave him his first show in 1962. Every painting sold before the exhibition opened. The speed was unusual. Warhol was doing similar things with soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles, but Lichtenstein's method was different: he hand-painted everything to look mechanically reproduced. The Ben-Day dots were applied through a stencil. The lines were drawn with a projector and then painted by hand. The process was laborious and precise, which was the joke: meticulous craftsmanship in the service of something that was supposed to look cheap.

He moved beyond comics into landscapes, brushstrokes (paintings of brushstrokes), Chinese landscapes, interiors, and nudes, all in the same flat, graphic style. The Brushstroke series, where he painted enormous images of painterly brushstrokes in the same deadpan comic-book technique, annoyed Abstract Expressionists specifically and delighted everyone else.
