A detailed 16th-century engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicting a dramatic narrative scene of conflict and action.
This engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicts a dramatic scene from classical or historical narrative, showing the figure of Beronica in a chariot, poised to strike a fallen man with a stone. Dolendo, a Dutch engraver active in the late sixteenth century, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The composition employs a dynamic arrangement, with the horses and the chariot creating a sense of forward motion that contrasts with the static, vulnerable position of the figure on the ground.
The work reflects the stylistic tendencies of Northern Mannerism, where artists favoured elongated forms, complex poses, and a high degree of detail in both the figures and the surrounding environment. The background features a distant landscape with architectural elements, providing a sense of scale and context to the central action. Dolendo uses fine lines to define the musculature of the horses and the drapery of the clothing, creating texture and volume through careful hatching and cross-hatching techniques.
As an example of late sixteenth-century printmaking, this piece offers insight into the visual storytelling methods of the era. The focus remains on the tension of the moment, captured through the expressive gestures of the participants. The print serves as a record of the technical capabilities of Dutch engravers, who often worked from designs by other masters or developed their own compositions based on literary and historical sources. The clarity of the line work and the balanced distribution of light and shadow across the scene demonstrate the skill required to translate complex narratives into the medium of engraving. This print is a representative example of the graphic arts produced in the Netherlands during a period of significant artistic transition.
