Descripción
A fluid watercolour study by John Singer Sargent, capturing the masts of Venetian boats against the backdrop of Santa Maria della Salute.
John Singer Sargent produced this watercolour during one of his frequent visits to Venice. The work captures the complex rigging of traditional sailing vessels moored in the Venetian lagoon, with the iconic domes of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute visible in the background. Sargent employs a rapid, fluid technique, allowing the white of the paper to represent the bright Mediterranean light reflecting off the water and the architectural surfaces.
The composition relies on the interplay between the dark, solid forms of the boat hulls in the foreground and the ethereal, sun-bleached structures of the church behind. By focusing on the geometric patterns created by masts, ropes, and spars, Sargent creates a sense of spatial depth without resorting to rigid perspective. The artist uses a palette of deep blues, burnt siennas, and ochres to define the maritime elements, contrasting these with the pale, washed-out tones of the distant architecture.
Sargent often favoured watercolour for his travels, as it allowed for immediate recording of light and atmosphere. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance technical precision with a loose, gestural application of pigment. The focus remains on the visual experience of the scene, prioritising the transient effects of light over photographic detail. The work is characteristic of his later career, during which he moved away from formal portraiture to explore the possibilities of plein-air painting in Europe. The result is a study of form and colour that captures the specific character of the Venetian harbour.

Behind the Salute - John Singer Sargent
Artist Biography
John Singer Sargent
He was born in Florence to American expatriate parents and grew up moving between European cities. He never lived in America until he was middle-aged. He studied under Carolus-Duran in Paris, who taught him to paint directly from observation without underdrawing: load the brush, find the right tone, put it down in one stroke. The method required extraordinary hand-eye coordination and supreme confidence. Sargent had both.
Madame X, painted in 1884, nearly ended his career. The portrait of Virginie Amelie Avegno Gautreau, an American socialite in Parisian society, showed her in a black dress with one shoulder strap hanging off. The Salon audience was scandalised. Sargent repainted the strap in its proper position but the damage was done. He left Paris for London and rebuilt.
In London he became the portraitist of choice for the Anglo-American upper class. The technique is astonishing: he painted quickly, in long single-session sittings, and the brushwork has a fluency that makes other portraitists look laborious. The Wyndham Sisters, Lady Agnew of Lochnaw, and the portrait of Theodore Roosevelt show what he could do at full stretch.
He eventually did stop. After 1907 he largely abandoned portraits for watercolours and the murals at the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts. The watercolours, painted on travels through Italy, Spain, and the Middle East, are looser and freer than the portraits and possibly better. He died in London in 1925, at sixty-nine.
