A woodblock print by Utagawa Sadahide depicting a French woman at her mirror, representative of the Yokohama-e genre documenting foreign visitors in Japan.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Sadahide belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of Japanese art produced during the late Edo period. These works documented the arrival of foreigners in the port city of Yokohama following the opening of Japan to international trade. Sadahide, a student of Utagawa Kunisada, became known for his detailed observations of Western visitors, their customs, and their attire.
The composition depicts a French woman standing before a mirror, adjusting her hair with a comb. Beside her, a smaller figure, likely a child, gazes into the same reflective surface. The artist captures the silhouette of the woman in a voluminous crinoline skirt, a fashion item that fascinated Japanese observers at the time. The grid pattern on the skirt and the bold red of the bodice contrast with the muted tones of the interior setting. A teal curtain frames the upper portion of the scene, adding a sense of domestic enclosure.
Technically, the print demonstrates the characteristic flat planes and clear outlines of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The artist uses a limited palette to define the figures and their clothing, focusing on the visual novelty of the foreign subjects. The mirror reflection provides a secondary perspective, allowing the viewer to see the woman's face while maintaining the focus on her posture and dress. This work offers a glimpse into the cultural exchange occurring in mid-nineteenth-century Japan, where traditional printmaking techniques were applied to subjects previously unseen in the local visual vocabulary. The cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the subject as French, reflecting the contemporary interest in categorising these new arrivals by their national origin.
