A dynamic woodblock triptych by Utagawa Kunisada depicting the legendary warrior Tomoe Gozen during the Battle of Awazugahara.
This woodblock triptych by Utagawa Kunisada depicts the Battle of Awazugahara, a conflict rooted in the Genpei War. The composition centres on the warrior Tomoe Gozen, a figure known for her martial skill and presence in classical Japanese literature. Kunisada, a prolific designer of the Utagawa school, employs the musha-e style, which focuses on historical and legendary warriors in combat.
The print displays the characteristic visual language of mid-nineteenth-century Edo period woodblock production. The figures are clad in elaborate, stylised armour, with their expressions rendered in a dramatic, theatrical manner. The action is set against a backdrop of pine trees and distant hills, providing a sense of place while maintaining the flattened perspective typical of the genre. The colour palette relies on muted earth tones, deep blues, and accents of red, which serve to define the individual figures amidst the chaos of the skirmish.
Kunisada was highly active during this period, producing numerous prints that catered to the public interest in historical narratives and kabuki theatre. This work demonstrates his ability to manage complex, multi-panel compositions, ensuring that the narrative flow remains coherent across the three sheets. The attention to detail in the armour plates, the weaponry, and the horses reflects the technical precision of the carvers and printers who collaborated with the artist. As a piece of Ukiyo-e, it offers a window into how historical events were interpreted and visualised for a contemporary audience in Japan. The print remains a representative example of the genre, capturing the tension and movement of the battlefield through traditional graphic techniques.
