A detailed 1794 etching by Christian Gottlob Proft depicting the mythological death of Balder, rendered with precise line work and classical composition.
This etching by Christian Gottlob Proft, dated 1794, depicts the tragic Norse myth of the death of Balder. The composition is divided into two distinct registers, a common device in late eighteenth-century narrative art. In the lower foreground, the fallen figure of Balder lies upon the ground, surrounded by figures in classical armour who react with sorrow. A woman stands to the left, her posture conveying a sense of quiet mourning. The scene is set against a rocky, cavernous backdrop that suggests a subterranean or otherworldly location.
Above, the composition shifts to the celestial realm. A bearded figure, likely representing Odin or another deity, is shown reclining upon clouds, his arms raised in a gesture of lamentation. Beside him, a second figure covers their face in grief. Proft employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of the period, using cross-hatching to define the contours of the figures and the texture of the rocky environment. The lighting is balanced, ensuring that the narrative focus remains on the emotional responses of the characters rather than atmospheric effects.
Proft, a German engraver active during the late Enlightenment, demonstrates a clear adherence to the formal rigour of the era. The figures are rendered with anatomical clarity, and the drapery follows the conventions of the time. This work reflects the contemporary interest in Northern European mythology, which was gaining traction alongside the more traditional Greco-Roman subjects. The print serves as a visual interpretation of the Eddic poems, translating oral tradition into a structured, graphic format. The attention to detail in the armour and the expressive gestures of the figures provide a clear window into the aesthetic priorities of late eighteenth-century printmaking, where clarity of line and narrative legibility were paramount.
