A late-period study by Gustav Klimt, featuring a dense, fruit-laden apple tree rendered with rhythmic, mosaic-like brushwork.
Painted in 1916, Apple Tree II is a representative example of Gustav Klimt's later work. During his summer retreats in the Austrian countryside, Klimt turned his attention to nature, producing a series of tree studies that depart from his earlier, highly decorative gold-leaf portraits. In this composition, the artist focuses on a single, mature apple tree, its dense canopy filling the upper portion of the frame. The tree is rendered with a mosaic-like application of paint, where individual dabs of colour create a textured surface. Small, circular yellow forms represent the fruit, scattered across the dark, foliage-heavy branches.
The background is intentionally flattened, consisting of a pale, neutral sky that pushes the tree into the foreground. Below, a strip of green earth provides a base, while a row of smaller, skeletal trees stretches across the horizon line. This arrangement creates a sense of spatial ambiguity, typical of Klimt's approach to the natural world. He avoids traditional perspective, preferring to treat the canvas as a surface for rhythmic, repetitive marks. The colour palette remains relatively restrained, relying on the contrast between the dark, earthy tones of the tree and the lighter, cooler hues of the surrounding environment.
Klimt's interest in the structural patterns of nature is evident here. He observes the tree not as a botanical specimen, but as a collection of shapes and colours. The work reflects his fascination with the decorative potential of organic forms, a theme that occupied him throughout his career. By isolating the subject, he invites the viewer to consider the tree as a self-contained entity, detached from the wider context of the orchard. This print captures the specific brushwork and tonal variations of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of Klimt's late-period technique.
