A precise etching by Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart documenting ancient jewellery from the historic Campana collection.
Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart was a master of the etching medium, recognised for his ability to replicate the textures of metal, stone, and glass with extreme precision. This work depicts a selection of items from the Campana collection, a vast assembly of antiquities gathered by the Italian marchese Giampietro Campana. The collection was eventually dispersed, with many pieces entering the holdings of the Louvre and the Hermitage Museum.
In this etching, Jacquemart captures the physical properties of ancient jewellery. The composition is organised as a series of individual studies, allowing the viewer to examine the form of each object in isolation. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the filigree work, the weight of the gold, and the specific geometry of the clasps and pendants. His technique relies on a subtle use of cross-hatching to suggest volume and shadow, ensuring that the metallic surfaces appear reflective and tactile.
Jacquemart often collaborated with his father, the art historian Albert Jacquemart, to document decorative arts. His work is valued for its technical accuracy, which provides a clear record of the objects as they appeared in the mid-nineteenth century. By stripping away the context of the display case, the etching focuses entirely on the craftsmanship of the ancient goldsmiths. The print serves as a document of archaeological interest, reflecting the period's fascination with classical history and the systematic classification of historical artefacts. The clean, minimalist presentation on the page allows the viewer to appreciate the technical skill required to render such small, complex objects with clarity and grace.
