A charcoal study by Piet Mondrian, capturing the transition from representational tree forms to the geometric abstraction of his later period.
This charcoal study by Piet Mondrian captures a transitional moment in the artist's career. During the early 1910s, Mondrian moved from representational depictions of nature toward the structured abstraction that would define his later work. In this piece, the subject of trees is reduced to a series of rhythmic, intersecting lines and tonal washes. The branches are no longer rendered with botanical precision, but rather as a network of structural elements that suggest the form of the tree while simultaneously breaking it down into geometric components.
The composition demonstrates the influence of Analytic Cubism, which Mondrian encountered during his time in Paris. He employs a limited palette of charcoal greys and blacks, focusing entirely on the interplay between line and space. The background is not a void, but a series of fragmented planes that merge with the foreground, creating a shallow, compressed depth. This approach allows the viewer to observe the process of abstraction, as the organic subject matter is systematically translated into a grid-like arrangement.
Mondrian's mark-making is deliberate and varied. He uses bold, dark strokes to define the primary structure of the trunks and branches, while lighter, smudged areas provide volume and atmosphere. The work retains a sense of the artist's hand, showing the physical application of charcoal on the paper surface. This study provides insight into the rigorous intellectual process Mondrian applied to his subjects, moving away from the descriptive toward the essential. It is a clear example of the artist's search for a universal visual language, stripping away extraneous detail to reveal the underlying order of the natural world. The work remains a significant record of the shift toward the non-representational style that would eventually lead to his iconic compositions of primary colours and black lines.
