An evocative watercolour illustration by Edmund Dulac from his 1909 edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, capturing a quiet, contemplative moment.
This illustration by Edmund Dulac originates from his 1909 edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Dulac, a French-born artist who settled in London, became a central figure in the early twentieth-century boom of gift-book publishing. His approach to the Rubaiyat reflects the period's fascination with Orientalism, a style that often blended Persian motifs with European aesthetic sensibilities.
The composition depicts a man and a woman resting beneath the boughs of a tree, a scene that captures the contemplative nature of the poem. Dulac employs a muted colour palette, relying on earthy ochres, soft greens, and deep browns to ground the figures within their environment. The woman leans against the tree trunk, her gaze directed toward the man who reclines on the grass. Beside him sits a simple clay jug and a loaf of bread, direct references to the famous quatrain regarding the necessities for a contented life.
Dulac uses fine, precise brushwork to define the textures of the clothing and the gnarled bark of the tree. The background features a crescent moon, which adds a sense of quietude to the outdoor setting. Unlike the more decorative work of his contemporaries, Dulac focuses on the narrative atmosphere of the text. The figures appear integrated into the landscape, with the foliage framing the scene to create a sense of intimacy. This print demonstrates his technical skill in watercolour, particularly in his ability to manage light and shadow within a complex, multi-layered composition. The work remains a representative example of the high-quality book illustration produced during the Edwardian era, where the physical book was treated as an object of art.
