Suzuki Harunobu was a central figure in the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in Japanese woodblock printing. This work depicts a woman engaged in the act of weaving, a common domestic scene within the ukiyo-e tradition. The composition focuses on the figure, whose posture is slightly inclined as she attends to the loom. Harunobu is known for his slender, ethereal figures, and this print reflects that aesthetic choice.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that complement the paper texture. The lines are fine and controlled, defining the folds of the kimono and the structure of the loom with precision. Unlike later, more crowded compositions, this print maintains a sense of space, allowing the viewer to focus on the quiet concentration of the subject.
