A detailed lithograph by Jules Dupré depicting a rural scene in Normandy, featuring farm buildings and horses by a pond.
This lithograph, titled Vue Prise en Normandie, captures a quiet rural moment characteristic of the Barbizon School. Jules Dupré, a central figure in this movement, focused his attention on the French countryside, moving away from the rigid academic traditions of his time to observe nature directly. The composition features a cluster of modest farm buildings nestled near a water source, where horses are shown drinking. The sky occupies a significant portion of the frame, rendered with varied line weights to suggest the movement of clouds and the atmospheric conditions of the region.
Dupré was known for his ability to convey the weight and texture of the natural world through printmaking. In this work, the contrast between the dark, dense foliage of the trees and the reflective surface of the water creates a sense of depth. The inclusion of figures and animals provides a sense of scale and daily activity, grounding the scene in a specific time and place. The print was published in the periodical L'Artiste, which helped disseminate the aesthetic values of the Barbizon painters to a wider audience. The technical execution of the lithographic stone allows for soft transitions in tone, particularly in the sky and the shadows cast by the buildings. This piece offers a glimpse into the mid-nineteenth-century interest in the rural vernacular, documenting the simple structures and agricultural life of Normandy. It remains a clear example of the period's preference for unidealised, observational subject matter.
