A 1914 lithograph by Max Liebermann depicting a crowd before the Berlin Palace, published in the first issue of the wartime periodical Kriegszeit.
This lithograph, titled Vor dem Schloss, appeared as the front page of the inaugural issue of Kriegszeit: Künstlerflugblätter on 31 August 1914. Published in Berlin shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, this periodical served as a vehicle for German artists to express their reactions to the conflict. Max Liebermann, a central figure in the Berlin Secession, captures a scene of public assembly before the Berlin Palace. The composition is dominated by a dense, agitated crowd in the foreground, rendered with rapid, expressive strokes that convey a sense of collective urgency. Behind the figures, the architecture of the palace rises, its form sketched with a lighter, more atmospheric touch that contrasts with the dark, textured mass of the people below.
Liebermann employs a monochromatic palette, typical of his graphic work, to focus on the interplay of light and shadow. The lines are energetic and immediate, reflecting the speed at which the artist worked to document the unfolding events of late summer 1914. The inclusion of the handwritten caption at the bottom, quoting the Kaiser's famous declaration, anchors the image in its specific historical moment. This print offers a glimpse into the early days of the war, when public sentiment was often captured through the medium of the artist-led broadsheet. The work functions as both a historical document and a personal observation by one of Germany's most respected painters of the era. It avoids the polished finish of academic art, opting instead for a raw, sketch-like quality that communicates the tension of the period. The print remains a significant example of how visual artists engaged with the rapid shifts in German society at the start of the twentieth century.
