A late fourteenth-century tempera panel by Spinello Aretino, depicting the Virgin and Child surrounded by angels against a gold-leaf background.
This work by Spinello Aretino displays the characteristics of late fourteenth-century Tuscan painting. The composition follows the traditional Maestà format, placing the Virgin Mary upon a throne with the Christ Child held in her lap. The figures are surrounded by a celestial court, with two angels kneeling in the foreground and two others positioned in the upper spandrels. The use of gold leaf for the background and the halos creates a luminous, non-naturalistic space, typical of the period's devotional art.
Spinello Aretino, a painter from Arezzo, was active throughout Tuscany and worked in a style influenced by the tradition of Giotto, yet he maintained a distinct decorative quality. The drapery of the Virgin's blue mantle and the robes of the angels show a focus on fluid, rhythmic lines. The faces are rendered with a soft, gentle modelling that provides a sense of humanity to the sacred subjects. The architectural frame, which is integral to the piece, features twisted columns and a pointed arch, reflecting the Gothic aesthetic of the time.
This panel demonstrates the technical skill required for tempera painting on wood. The application of pigment, mixed with egg yolk, allows for precise detail and a durable finish. The inclusion of small, circular medallions at the base of the frame, containing painted figures, adds a secondary layer of narrative detail to the primary scene. The work remains a clear example of the religious art commissioned for private chapels or small altars during the late medieval period in Italy. It captures the balance between the formal requirements of ecclesiastical art and the individual stylistic preferences of the artist.
