A classic Renaissance devotional panel by Neri di Bicci, featuring the Virgin and Child rendered in tempera and gold leaf.
Neri di Bicci was a prolific painter in fifteenth-century Florence, operating a large workshop that produced numerous devotional panels for both private and ecclesiastical patrons. This work depicts the Virgin Mary supporting the Christ Child, a subject that occupied a central position in the artistic output of the period. The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions, with the figures set against a simplified background that draws focus to their interaction.
The application of tempera on panel allows for the precise rendering of the figures, while the use of gold leaf for the haloes provides a luminous quality characteristic of the era. The Virgin is draped in a dark mantle, contrasting with the lighter tones of her undergarment and the delicate features of the child. Neri di Bicci maintained a consistent style throughout his career, often favouring clear outlines and a balanced arrangement of forms. His work provides insight into the commercial and artistic practices of the Florentine bottega, where standard models were adapted to meet the requirements of various commissions.
This print captures the texture of the original panel, including the subtle craquelure that has developed over centuries. The muted colour palette, dominated by deep blues, soft pinks, and the metallic sheen of gold, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the mid-Quattrocento. By focusing on the gentle gesture of the Virgin and the steady gaze of the child, the artist creates a sense of quietude. This piece is a representative example of the devotional art produced in Italy during the early Renaissance, demonstrating the technical skill and stylistic continuity maintained by Neri di Bicci and his assistants.
