Camille Corot visited Italy on three separate occasions, with his first trip between 1825 and 1828 proving formative for his development as a painter. During his stay in Venice in 1834, he produced this view of the Riva degli Schiavoni. The composition captures the architectural precision of the Venetian waterfront, focusing on the Doge's Palace and the iconic columns of Saint Mark and Saint Theodore.

Corot employs a clear, luminous palette to render the Mediterranean light.
