A powerful engraving from William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job, depicting the dramatic destruction of Job's children's house.
This engraving is the third plate from William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job, a series produced between 1823 and 1826. The work depicts the moment of catastrophe described in the biblical text, where a great wind from the wilderness destroys the house of Job's children. Blake employs his characteristic visionary style, using dramatic contrasts of light and shadow to convey the intensity of the event. At the top of the composition, a demonic figure hovers amidst swirling clouds, representing the destructive force unleashed upon the family. Below, the figures are caught in a chaotic collapse of architecture, their bodies contorted in expressions of alarm and sudden ruin.
Blake's technical approach to engraving here demonstrates his mastery of line and cross-hatching. The composition is framed by a decorative border containing further text and marginal imagery, a common feature in his illuminated books. The scene balances the physical destruction of the building with the spiritual weight of the narrative. The figures are rendered with muscularity and anatomical precision, typical of Blake's interest in classical forms filtered through his own idiosyncratic imagination. This series is widely considered one of his most accomplished graphic achievements, demonstrating his ability to interpret complex theological themes through a personal visual language. The print captures the tension between divine judgment and human suffering, rendered with a stark, monochromatic clarity that draws the viewer into the centre of the narrative action. By focusing on the immediate aftermath of the collapse, Blake creates a sense of urgency and emotional gravity that defines the entire Job series.
