A dual-panel graphite study exploring the relationship between objects and the space they occupy through geometric abstraction.
This composition presents a dual study in spatial relationships, rendered in graphite. The work is divided into two distinct panels, each exploring the interplay between form and the void. The left panel, titled 'Things in Space', depicts abstract, geometric shapes suspended within a shaded field. The forms appear to float, suggesting a vacuum or an indeterminate environment where objects exist independently of a fixed ground. The shading provides a sense of volume, yet the lack of a horizon line keeps the composition firmly within the realm of abstract inquiry.
The right panel, 'Space in Things', offers a contrasting perspective. Here, a dense, interlocking chain-like structure dominates the frame. The focus shifts from the objects themselves to the negative space created by their arrangement. The overlapping links create a complex web, where the voids between the solid lines become as significant as the forms themselves. This approach invites the viewer to consider how physical objects define and contain space, rather than merely occupying it.
The draughtsmanship is precise, utilising clean lines and controlled tonal gradients to articulate the geometry. The lettering at the top and bottom of the sheet suggests an educational or analytical intent, perhaps originating from a design curriculum or a theoretical treatise on visual perception. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, prioritising clarity of thought and structural logic. It functions as a visual exercise in phenomenology, asking the observer to distinguish between the object as a discrete entity and the object as a container for spatial experience. The monochromatic palette reinforces the analytical nature of the piece, stripping away the distraction of colour to focus entirely on the mechanics of composition and the philosophical implications of spatial definition.
