A 1679 etching by Frans Ertinger depicting the mythological scene of Thetis receiving armour for her son, Achilles, from the god Vulcan.
This etching by the Flemish artist Frans Ertinger, dated 1679, depicts a scene from Greek mythology. The narrative focuses on the moment the sea nymph Thetis visits the forge of Vulcan to request new armour for her son, Achilles. Ertinger employs a classic Baroque composition, framing the central action within an architectural structure featuring herms and decorative swags.
In the centre, Vulcan presents a shield to Thetis, who is accompanied by a small putto. The background reveals the industrial activity of the forge, where assistants work at an anvil. To the right, the composition opens to a marine setting, where a figure emerges from the water, suggesting the aquatic origins of Thetis. The artist uses precise line work to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of the metalwork. The inclusion of classical motifs, such as the peacock and the decorative cartouche at the top, reflects the period's interest in antiquity and theatrical presentation.
Ertinger, active in the late 17th century, demonstrates a mastery of the etching technique, balancing the busy activity of the forge with the more serene presence of the goddess. The work is contained within a structured border, which acts as a frame for the mythological event. The contrast between the dark, cavernous interior of the forge and the lighter, open space on the right provides a sense of depth. This print offers a clear example of the printmaking traditions of the era, where mythological narratives were often adapted for decorative and educational purposes. The technical execution shows a high degree of control, particularly in the rendering of the human form and the ornamental elements that surround the main scene.
