This work is a large-scale fresco located in the Salone dei Cinquecento within the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Giorgio Vasari executed this commission for Cosimo I de' Medici, documenting the military conflict of 1530 that resulted in the fall of the Florentine Republic and the restoration of Medici rule. The composition employs a high-angle, panoramic perspective, allowing the viewer to observe the entire city of Florence alongside the extensive encampments of the imperial forces surrounding the walls.

Vasari organises the visual field to communicate the scale of the operation. The Arno River cuts through the centre of the composition, providing a clear spatial anchor for the city architecture, including the recognisable silhouette of the Duomo. The surrounding hills are densely populated with military tents, artillery positions, and troop movements, rendered with a focus on topographical accuracy rather than individual portraiture. The colour palette relies on earthy tones for the terrain, contrasted against the terracotta roofs of the city and the muted blues of the distant horizon.

As a piece of political iconography, the fresco serves to legitimise the Medici authority by depicting the event that secured their power. Vasari, known for his administrative role in the Medici court, utilised this space to craft a narrative of order and historical inevitability. The inclusion of allegorical figures in the foreground provides a classical framing device, common in the Mannerist tradition, which balances the chaotic nature of the military scene with a sense of formal control. The work remains a primary visual record of sixteenth-century urban planning and military logistics in Tuscany.
