This etching, titled The Romancer, demonstrates the technical precision of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, a prominent French engraver of the eighteenth century. The composition is based on a painting by Antoine Watteau, reflecting the period's fascination with theatricality and amorous intrigue. The scene depicts a young woman holding a guitar, seated in a garden setting, while a suitor kneels before her. Their interaction is observed by onlookers emerging from the shadows, adding a layer of voyeuristic tension to the narrative.
Cochin employs fine, controlled lines to render the textures of the figures' clothing and the surrounding foliage. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and volume, typical of the high-quality reproductive prints produced in Paris during this era.
