Beschreibung
A historical watercolour by David Cox depicting the 1831 opening ceremony of the New London Bridge, featuring the granite arches and the City of London skyline.
David Cox produced this watercolour to record the ceremonial opening of the New London Bridge on 1 August 1831. The event was a significant moment in the urban development of the city. King William IV and Queen Adelaide attended the festivities, which are indicated here by the yellow pavilions and flags positioned along the span of the bridge.
The composition focuses on the masonry of the new structure, designed by John Rennie and completed by his son. Cox uses broad washes of colour to define the five granite arches. The shadows beneath the arches are rendered in deep purples and blues, contrasting with the pale stone. In the background, the artist includes recognisable landmarks of the City of London. The Monument to the Great Fire of London stands tall behind the bridge, while the spire of St Magnus-the-Martyr is visible to the right.
Cox was a leading figure in the English watercolour school. His technique in this work demonstrates a shift away from the precise topographical style of the eighteenth century towards a more atmospheric approach. The sky is suggested with light, fluid strokes, and the water of the Thames reflects the pale light of the day. The buildings on the left bank are sketched with enough detail to provide context without distracting from the central subject. This print provides a historical record of a transformed London riverfront during the early nineteenth century.
