A delicate lithograph by Albert Belleroche depicting a nurse in profile, captured with refined, minimal line work.
Albert Belleroche, a British artist of French descent, is recognised for his mastery of lithography. This work, titled The Nurse, captures a figure in profile, rendered with the economy of line characteristic of his mature style. The subject wears a traditional nurse's uniform, complete with a cap and apron, suggesting the context of the First World War era. She holds a small object, perhaps a vial or a medical instrument, while her gaze is directed downward, creating a sense of quiet focus.
Belleroche avoids heavy shading, preferring to define form through delicate, suggestive strokes. The background remains largely empty, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the posture and attire of the nurse. His technique relies on the subtle pressure of the lithographic crayon, allowing for varying degrees of density that suggest the texture of fabric and the soft fall of light. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figure echoed by the faint, rectangular outline of a door or window frame behind her.
This print reflects the artist's interest in capturing fleeting moments of daily life. Belleroche was a close associate of John Singer Sargent, and his work shares a similar interest in the fluidity of the human form. By stripping away extraneous detail, he achieves a clarity that allows the viewer to observe the subject without distraction. The work is an example of early twentieth-century graphic art, where the focus shifted toward the expressive potential of the line itself. It remains a restrained, observational piece that documents the appearance of medical staff during a period of significant social change in Britain.
