This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts a procession of the Korean diplomatic mission as it travels toward Edo. During the Edo period, these missions were significant diplomatic events, and their arrival in Japan generated considerable public interest. Shigenaga, a teacher of the famous Harunobu, was a key figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, particularly in the refinement of the benizuri-e (rose-printed) technique.
The composition is arranged horizontally, typical of narrative scrolls or wide-format prints of the era. The figures are depicted in a rhythmic, linear fashion, moving across the frame. The ambassador is shown seated in a palanquin, sheltered by a large parasol, while attendants and musicians accompany the group on foot and horseback. The artist employs a flattened perspective, focusing on the decorative patterns of the garments and the uniformity of the procession. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft greens, muted ochres, and the stark black of the ink lines to define the forms.
Shigenaga was known for his experimentation with perspective and his ability to capture contemporary events with a sense of order and clarity. This work provides a glimpse into the formalised nature of international relations in eighteenth-century Japan. The print demonstrates the artist's skill in balancing individual characterisation with the requirements of a group scene. The drapery of the robes and the specific headgear worn by the Korean officials are rendered with attention to detail, reflecting the historical reality of these diplomatic visits.
