A refined Neoclassical engraving by Maurice Blot, depicting the mythological scene of Paris choosing the most beautiful goddess.
This engraving by Maurice Blot depicts the classical myth of the Judgement of Paris, a narrative originating from the Cypria, part of the Epic Cycle of ancient Greek literature. The scene captures the moment Paris, a prince of Troy, prepares to award the golden apple to the goddess he deems the most beautiful. The composition follows the established Neoclassical conventions of the late eighteenth century, prioritising anatomical precision, balanced grouping, and a clear, theatrical arrangement of figures.
Blot, a skilled French engraver, demonstrates technical mastery in his handling of light and shadow. The figures of Athena, Aphrodite, and Hera are rendered with smooth, sculptural modelling, reflecting the influence of antique statuary. Paris is seated to the right, holding the apple, while Hermes stands behind him, overseeing the proceedings. Cupid is positioned near the goddesses, adding a sense of narrative movement to the otherwise static, posed arrangement. The background features a softly rendered mountainous terrain, which provides a sense of depth without distracting from the primary subjects.
This work is a fine example of the reproductive print culture of the period, where engravers translated paintings into monochrome media for wider circulation. The use of fine cross-hatching and stippling allows for a wide range of tonal values, creating a sense of volume in the musculature and drapery. The print maintains a formal, restrained quality, typical of the era's interest in classical themes and the idealised human form. It serves as a record of the aesthetic values prevalent in French art at the turn of the nineteenth century, where clarity of line and adherence to classical proportion were paramount. The print is a precise execution of the mythological subject, capturing the tension of the moment through the deliberate posture and interaction of the figures.
