A portrait of The Hon. Mrs. Graham by Thomas Gainsborough, painted in the late 18th century. This work displays the artist's characteristic fluid brushwork and atmospheric style.
Thomas Gainsborough painted this portrait of Mary, The Honourable Mrs. Graham, between 1775 and 1777. The subject was the wife of Thomas Graham, later Lord Lynedoch. Gainsborough depicts her in a silk gown, her gaze directed away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation. The composition utilises a soft, atmospheric background that contrasts with the precise rendering of the sitter's features and the texture of her attire.
Gainsborough was known for his fluid brushwork and his ability to capture the character of his sitters through light and shadow. In this work, the muted tones of the background allow the figure to emerge with clarity. The artist avoids rigid formality, opting instead for a sense of movement in the drapery and the sitter's posture. This approach was characteristic of his later portraiture, where he moved away from the strict conventions of the period to favour a more personal, painterly style.
The portrait was originally commissioned to celebrate the couple's marriage. Following the early death of Mrs. Graham in 1792, her husband found the likeness too painful to view. He had the painting crated and stored away, where it remained unseen for many years. It eventually entered the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland in 1859, where it has remained a subject of study for its technical execution and its history of private ownership. The work demonstrates the artist's skill in balancing formal portraiture with a sense of intimacy, using a palette that relies on subtle gradations of tone rather than high-contrast colour. The handling of the paint, particularly in the fabric of the dress, reveals the speed and confidence of Gainsborough's technique during his time in London.
