A detailed reproduction of Pietro Lorenzetti's 14th-century fresco from the Lower Church of San Francesco in Assisi, depicting the Crucifixion.
This fresco, located in the left transept of the Lower Church of San Francesco in Assisi, is a work by the Sienese painter Pietro Lorenzetti. Executed during the early 14th century, it forms part of a larger cycle depicting the Passion of Christ. The composition is notable for its emotional intensity and the spatial organisation of the figures.
Lorenzetti arranges the scene with a focus on the central cross, surrounded by a dense crowd of soldiers, mourners, and onlookers. The deep blue background provides a stark contrast to the pale bodies of the crucified figures. Small, winged angels hover around the cross, their expressions conveying grief. Below, the crowd is rendered with a sense of individual movement and interaction, moving away from the rigid, hieratic forms common in earlier Byzantine-influenced painting. The artist employs a degree of naturalism in the depiction of the horses and the varied postures of the figures, which helps to ground the narrative in a recognisable human experience.
Despite the loss of some plaster at the base of the wall, the remaining sections demonstrate Lorenzetti's ability to manage complex, multi-figure compositions within an architectural space. The surrounding decorative borders, featuring geometric patterns and small medallions of saints, frame the central event. This work reflects the shift in Italian art towards a more humanistic approach to religious subjects, where the physical and psychological reactions of the participants are given weight. The palette is dominated by deep blues, earthy ochres, and muted reds, which are characteristic of the fresco technique of the period. This print captures the scale and atmospheric quality of the original mural, offering a view into the artistic developments of the Sienese School during the Trecento.
