A refined red chalk drawing by Herman Coets depicting the biblical scene of the calling of the apostles Peter and Andrew.
This red chalk drawing by Herman Coets depicts the biblical narrative of the calling of the apostles Peter and Andrew. The composition follows a traditional arrangement, placing the figure of Christ on the right bank, gesturing towards the fishermen in their boat. The fishermen are shown in the midst of their labour, with nets cast into the water, capturing a moment of transition as they prepare to leave their trade to follow the figure on the shore.
Coets employs the technique of red chalk, or sanguine, to build form through delicate hatching and cross-hatching. This medium allows for a soft, tonal quality that defines the musculature of the figures and the texture of the water. The background features a rocky outcrop and a tree, providing a sense of place while maintaining focus on the interaction between the central figures. The drawing demonstrates the artist's attention to anatomical proportion and the fluid movement of drapery, which are characteristic of the period's academic approach to figure studies.
As a Dutch artist active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, Coets worked within a tradition that valued clarity of narrative and technical precision. This work functions as a study of human gesture and interaction, stripped of the complexity of oil painting to reveal the underlying structure of the scene. The use of light and shadow, achieved through the varying density of the chalk marks, creates a sense of depth across the paper surface. The work remains a clear example of the preparatory drawings produced by artists of the era to refine their compositions before moving to larger, more permanent media.
