The term 'juste milieu' refers to the moderate political path adopted by the government of Louis-Philippe, which many contemporary critics viewed as a betrayal of the revolutionary ideals that brought him to power.

The composition depicts a chaotic birth scene. The personified figure of Liberty is shown in labour, giving birth to a monstrous infant representing the new political order. The scene is populated by recognisable figures of the era, including politicians and military officials who oversee the delivery with cynical detachment. The doctor, rubbing his hands in satisfaction, represents the opportunistic nature of the administration. A large Gallic rooster, a traditional symbol of France, stands in the foreground, interacting with a smaller figure who gestures mockingly.

Technically, the work demonstrates the expressive potential of 19th-century lithography. The artists utilise varied line weights and cross-hatching to create depth and texture, from the folds of the heavy curtains to the uniforms of the assembled men.
