A powerful 1923 lithograph by Lovis Corinth, capturing a dramatic moment from the First Book of Samuel with raw, expressive mark-making.
This lithograph by Lovis Corinth, dated 1923, depicts a scene from the First Book of Samuel. The narrative concerns the Philistines placing the captured Ark of the Covenant within the temple of their deity, Dagon. Corinth, a central figure in German art during the early twentieth century, moved away from his earlier academic training towards a more subjective and gestural style in his later years. This work reflects that shift, utilising loose, energetic marks to convey the tension of the biblical encounter.
The composition is dominated by a central circular form, inscribed with the letters JEVA, which acts as a symbolic representation of the divine presence. The surrounding space is filled with dark, textured strokes that suggest the interior of the temple. Corinth avoids precise anatomical detail, opting instead for a raw, immediate application of lithographic crayon. The heavy shadows and the stark contrast between the light-filled centre and the surrounding gloom create a sense of unease and spiritual weight.
Corinth produced this work during a period of significant personal and national upheaval in Germany. His late prints often explore themes of mortality, religion, and human frailty. By focusing on the moment when the idol of Dagon is found fallen before the Ark, Corinth engages with the power dynamics inherent in the biblical text. The print does not seek to illustrate the story with historical accuracy, but rather to capture the emotional intensity of the confrontation between competing belief systems. The rough, almost frantic quality of the lines demonstrates the artist's focus on the expressive potential of the medium, prioritising the psychological impact of the scene over traditional representation.
