This woodblock print depicts the kabuki actor Hanaoka Miyako, a figure associated with the early development of the Torii school of art. Torii Kiyonobu I, the founder of this school, specialised in yakusha-e, or actor prints, which served as promotional material for the kabuki theatres of Edo. The composition follows the aesthetic conventions of the period, utilising bold, calligraphic lines to define the figure and the surrounding motifs.
The actor is shown in a graceful, slightly stooped posture, wearing a kimono decorated with pine patterns. The use of colour is restrained, typical of early hand-coloured prints, with touches of orange and yellow applied to the monochrome ink base. The inclusion of a crest, or mon, in the upper right corner identifies the actor or the theatrical house, a common practice in these promotional works. The background features a stylised flowering branch, which provides a sense of seasonal context without distracting from the primary subject.
Kiyonobu I is credited with establishing the visual language of the Torii school, which remained the dominant force in kabuki-related imagery for generations. His work prioritised the expressive power of the line, often exaggerating the physical presence of the actor to convey the intensity of a performance. This print offers a glimpse into the early history of Japanese printmaking, where the intersection of commercial theatre and visual art created a distinct cultural output. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of such an early work, with the ink lines retaining their original clarity and strength. This piece is a representative example of the early Ukiyo-e style, focusing on the theatricality and fashion of the Edo period.
