A 1952 oil painting by Le Corbusier, featuring his characteristic geometric abstraction and disciplined use of colour to depict the bull motif.
Taureau XVI, painted in 1952, represents the later period of Le Corbusier's artistic output. While primarily known for his architectural contributions, he maintained a rigorous painting practice throughout his life. This work belongs to a series exploring the bull, a recurring motif in his visual vocabulary. The composition demonstrates his adherence to the principles of Purism, a movement he co-founded with Amédée Ozenfant, which sought to strip away decorative excess in favour of clear, geometric order and harmonious proportions.
The canvas is divided into distinct zones of colour and form. The central figure of the bull is abstracted into a series of interlocking shapes, lines, and planes. Le Corbusier employs a palette of muted blues, purples, and ochre, punctuated by sharper accents of red and teal. The lines are precise, defining the boundaries of the geometric segments while suggesting the muscularity and movement of the animal. The background is treated with similar structural discipline, creating a shallow space that emphasises the two-dimensional nature of the picture plane.
Unlike his architectural work, which often prioritised functionalism, his paintings allowed for a more personal exploration of form and colour. The bull serves as a vessel for his experiments with balance and spatial tension. The work reflects his interest in the relationship between the object and its environment, a theme that permeated his architectural theories. The application of paint is controlled, avoiding expressive brushwork in favour of flat, uniform surfaces. This approach maintains the clarity of the composition, ensuring that the viewer focuses on the structural logic of the image. Taureau XVI is a representative example of his mid-century aesthetic, where the rigour of his architectural training informs the construction of his canvases.
