A powerful study of a seated nude by Russian avant-garde painter Ilya Mashkov, featuring his signature sculptural brushwork and earthy colour palette.
Ilya Mashkov was a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, a collective that rejected traditional academic painting in favour of a more robust, expressive approach. This work displays the characteristic weight and volume that defined his output during the early 20th century. The figure is rendered with a sculptural quality, where the artist uses thick, deliberate brushwork to define the contours of the body against a simplified background.
The composition balances the central figure with a still-life arrangement to the left, featuring a pitcher and fruit. This inclusion of domestic objects is typical of Mashkov, who often treated the human form with the same material focus as his still-life subjects. The palette relies on earthy tones, contrasted by the pale, almost chalky flesh tones of the model. The background, composed of broad, gestural strokes of green, provides a sense of depth without resorting to traditional perspective.
Mashkov's approach to the nude is devoid of idealisation. Instead, he focuses on the physical presence of the subject, using a heavy application of paint to convey texture and mass. The influence of Paul Cézanne is evident in the structural handling of the form and the way the space is constructed through colour planes. This print captures the raw energy of the original oil painting, preserving the tactile quality of the brushstrokes and the specific colour relationships that Mashkov employed to create a sense of physical reality. It is a direct example of the early Russian avant-garde movement, which sought to strip away decorative artifice to reveal the essential properties of the subject matter.
