A 1654 portrait engraving of physician Robert Bayfield by the master printmaker William Faithorne the Elder.
This engraving by William Faithorne the Elder depicts Robert Bayfield, a physician and author, at the age of twenty-five. Produced in 1654, the work demonstrates the technical precision that defined Faithorne's career as one of the most accomplished engravers of the seventeenth century in England. The portrait is contained within an oval frame, a common convention for frontispieces of the period, which includes the subject's name and age in Latin. Below the portrait, a small heraldic shield is positioned above a four-line verse that contrasts the physical likeness of the man with the intellectual content found in his medical writings.
Faithorne employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varying line weights to model the subject's features and the texture of his clothing. The light source is directed from the upper left, creating subtle shadows that define the contours of the face and the folds of the doublet. The artist's ability to render the soft quality of the hair and the crispness of the collar reflects his training under Robert Peake and his subsequent exposure to French printmaking techniques during his exile in Paris. The composition is balanced and formal, adhering to the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture where the sitter's status is conveyed through a combination of sober attire and direct, steady gaze.
As a master of the burin, Faithorne achieved a level of detail that allowed his prints to serve as authoritative records of contemporary figures. This specific engraving was created for Bayfield's medical publications, acting as a visual introduction to the author for his readership. The clarity of the lines and the deliberate use of negative space within the oval frame ensure that the focus remains entirely on the subject, providing a clear window into the appearance of a mid-seventeenth-century professional.
