A detailed Meiji-era triptych woodblock print by Inoue Yasuji, depicting a formal military review at the Aoyama Parade Grounds in Tokyo.
This triptych by Inoue Yasuji depicts a formal military review at the Aoyama Parade Grounds in Tokyo during the Meiji period. The scene captures the modernisation of the Japanese military, as evidenced by the Western-style uniforms, ceremonial swords, and horse-drawn carriages. The composition is divided into three panels, creating a panoramic view of the officers and soldiers assembled on the field.
Inoue Yasuji, a student of Kobayashi Kiyochika, was known for his interest in the changing urban environment of Tokyo and the adoption of Western artistic techniques, such as the use of light and shadow. In this print, the figures are rendered with precise detail, reflecting the rigid discipline and formal nature of the event. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the contrast between the dark military tunics and the muted tones of the parade ground and sky. The inclusion of the imperial crest on the flags and the officers' uniforms signifies the authority of the state during a period of rapid national transformation.
As a woodblock print, the work demonstrates the technical skill required to align three separate blocks to form a cohesive image. The lines are clean and deliberate, typical of the late Ukiyo-e tradition that sought to document contemporary events rather than traditional folklore or theatrical subjects. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of late nineteenth-century Japan, where traditional printmaking methods were applied to modern subjects, documenting the shift towards a Westernised national identity.
