A traditional Kalighat painting depicting the divine couple Radha and Krishna, rendered with bold lines and silver-painted accents on paper.
This work originates from the Kalighat school of painting, a genre that emerged in nineteenth-century Kolkata. Artists working near the Kalighat Kali Temple produced these images for pilgrims and visitors. The style is defined by bold, sweeping brushstrokes and a reduction of form to essential shapes. This particular piece depicts the divine couple, Radha and Krishna, standing upon a raised platform. Krishna is rendered in his traditional blue hue, holding a flute, while Radha stands beside him, adjusting her veil.
The composition is flat, prioritising clear silhouettes and expressive gestures over realistic perspective. The artists utilised a limited palette of mineral pigments, often augmented with silver paint to delineate jewellery and textile borders. This specific application of silver provides a metallic sheen against the matte paper surface. The figures are stylised, with elongated eyes and fluid postures that reflect the aesthetic conventions of the period.
Kalighat paintings were produced rapidly to meet high demand, yet they maintain a distinct visual language. The focus remains on the devotional subject matter, presented with a directness that appealed to a broad audience. The figures occupy a shallow, stage-like space, which is a common feature in this tradition. The use of line is confident and rhythmic, defining the contours of the garments and the physical forms of the deities. This print captures the essence of the Kalighat aesthetic, where traditional religious themes meet the rapid production methods of the urban bazaar. It serves as a record of the visual culture in colonial-era Bengal, where local artisans adapted their techniques to suit the changing tastes of a growing city population.
