Cornelis Norbertus Gysbrechts was a master of the trompe-l'oeil genre, a style designed to deceive the eye into perceiving a two-dimensional surface as a three-dimensional reality. This work, a classic example of the quodlibet, presents a collection of everyday objects arranged against a wooden board. The term quodlibet, meaning 'what you will' in Latin, refers to a composition of miscellaneous items, often including letters, writing implements, and small personal effects.

The composition features a cluster of folded letters, secured with red wax seals, pinned to a wooden surface. A blue paper roll, a comb, and a stylus are positioned alongside the correspondence, creating a sense of casual disarray. Gysbrechts employs precise brushwork to render the textures of the paper, the sheen of the wax, and the grain of the wood.
