Ilya Repin captures the young Alexander Pushkin reciting his poetry before the elder poet Gavrila Derzhavin in this dramatic historical scene from 1911.
This work depicts a significant moment in Russian literary history: the young Alexander Pushkin reciting his poem, 'Memories in Tsarskoe Selo', before the esteemed poet Gavrila Derzhavin at the Imperial Lyceum on 8 January 1815. Ilya Repin, a master of Russian Realism, captures the tension and intellectual fervour of the occasion. The composition places the young Pushkin on the right, his posture dynamic and youthful, contrasting with the seated, elderly Derzhavin, who leans forward in his chair, visibly moved by the performance.
Repin employs a dramatic use of light and shadow to direct the viewer's attention toward the interaction between the two poets. The long table, draped in a deep red cloth, acts as a visual anchor, separating the audience from the performers. The surrounding crowd of spectators, rendered with loose, expressive brushwork, creates a sense of depth and atmosphere within the hall. The artist focuses on the psychological reaction of the figures, particularly the awe and surprise evident on the faces of the onlookers.
Completed in 1911, the painting reflects Repin's technical maturity and his interest in historical narrative. He avoids rigid academic composition, opting instead for a more fluid, painterly approach that conveys the immediacy of the event. The palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, punctuated by the striking red of the table cover, which draws the eye across the canvas. This piece offers a window into the cultural life of early nineteenth-century Russia, documenting a moment where the torch of literary genius was perceived to pass from one generation to the next. The work remains a fine example of Repin's ability to combine historical accuracy with emotional resonance, providing a vivid reconstruction of a celebrated literary encounter.
