A formal eighteenth-century portrait engraving of Dutch diplomat Pieter Johan van Berckel by the skilled Dutch artist Reinier Vinkeles (I).
This portrait depicts Pieter Johan van Berckel, a Dutch diplomat who served as the first minister plenipotentiary to the United States. Reinier Vinkeles (I), a prolific Dutch draughtsman and engraver, executed this work with the precision characteristic of late eighteenth-century printmaking. The composition follows the conventions of formal portraiture, presenting the subject within a trompe l'oeil frame that mimics a stone or marble niche.
The subject is shown in a bust-length format, wearing the formal attire of his office, including a powdered wig and an elaborate cravat. Vinkeles employs a variety of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the textures of the fabric and the soft modelling of the face. Below the portrait, the artist includes symbolic elements, such as a caduceus and a scroll, which signify the subject's diplomatic role and authority. A heavy, draped curtain hangs to the right, adding a sense of theatricality and depth to the scene.
Vinkeles was active in Amsterdam and produced a vast number of prints, often documenting the political and social figures of his era. His technical skill allowed him to capture subtle variations in light and shadow, which is evident in the way the light falls across the subject's features. The inclusion of the subject's name and title in the lower margin provides historical context, identifying him as a representative of the States of the United Netherlands to the United States of North America. This print serves as a record of the diplomatic relations between the two nations during the late eighteenth century, rendered with the formal restraint typical of the period.
