A sixteenth-century woodcut portrait of King John III of Portugal on horseback, featuring hand-coloured details and royal heraldry.
This woodcut depicts King John III of Portugal mounted on a white horse, a composition that reflects the sixteenth-century tradition of royal portraiture. The monarch is shown in profile, dressed in the formal attire of his era, including a dark coat with fur trim and a feathered cap. He holds a baton, a symbol of his military and political authority. The horse is rendered in a stylised manner, captured in a levade position, which adds a sense of controlled movement to the static figure of the king.
To the right of the figure, the Portuguese coat of arms is displayed, topped with a crown. This inclusion serves to identify the subject and his royal status clearly. The text at the top of the print provides a formal title in both Latin and Dutch, listing the king's various titles and domains. The hand-colouring applied to the woodcut uses a limited palette, which helps to define the different elements of the king's costume and the heraldic shield.
Sylvester van Parijs, active in the mid-sixteenth century, produced this work as part of a broader interest in documenting the figures of European royalty. The print is characterised by clear, bold outlines typical of the woodcut medium, with minimal shading or atmospheric depth. The focus remains on the symbolic representation of the ruler rather than a naturalistic depiction of the scene. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the Renaissance, where such images were circulated to disseminate the likeness and status of monarchs across the continent. The work is a clear example of the graphic arts used for political and historical documentation during this period.
