A nineteenth-century lithographic portrait of Marshal Jean-Baptiste Jourdan by French artist Auguste Toussaint Lecler.
This lithographic portrait depicts Jean-Baptiste Jourdan, a prominent French military figure who served as a Marshal of the Empire. Auguste Toussaint Lecler, a French printmaker active during the early nineteenth century, captures the subject in formal military attire. The composition focuses on the bust of the Marshal, who is shown in three-quarter profile. His uniform features detailed epaulettes and the star of the Legion of Honour, reflecting his status within the Napoleonic hierarchy.
Lecler employs the lithographic medium to achieve subtle tonal gradations, particularly in the shading of the face and the texture of the military jacket. The technique allows for a soft, pencil-like quality that defines the contours of the subject while maintaining a sense of volume. The background remains plain, ensuring the viewer's attention stays fixed on the sitter. Below the portrait, the inscription identifies the subject as Le Maréchal Comte Jourdan, alongside the publication details indicating the print was issued in Paris at the author's address on Quai de Gèvres.
This work belongs to a period when lithography was gaining popularity as a medium for reproducing portraits of public figures. It provides a clear example of the formal portraiture conventions of the era, where military rank and personal dignity were conveyed through precise rendering of insignia and facial features. The print serves as a historical record of a figure whose career spanned the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic era. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition reflect the technical proficiency of Lecler, who produced numerous portraits of his contemporaries during this time. The print is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, demonstrating its value as a document of nineteenth-century French portraiture.
