A formal Baroque engraving by Elias Nessenthaler depicting the military commander Friedrich von Schomberg in armour.
This engraving by Elias Nessenthaler depicts Friedrich von Schomberg, a military leader of significant standing during the late seventeenth century. The work follows the conventions of formal portraiture common in the Baroque period, presenting the subject within a simulated stone oval frame set atop a pedestal. The inscription on the base identifies the sitter as Fridericus Dux de Schomberg, confirming his status and title.
Nessenthaler employs precise line work to define the textures of the subject's attire. The armour, rendered with careful attention to light and shadow, contrasts with the soft, voluminous curls of the periwig. The subject is shown in a three-quarter turn, looking back towards the viewer, a pose intended to convey both authority and a sense of immediate presence. The engraving technique allows for a subtle range of grey tones, which model the facial features and the metallic sheen of the breastplate.
As a printmaker, Nessenthaler was active in Augsburg, producing works that circulated widely among the European elite. This portrait serves as a record of the visual language used to commemorate military figures of the era. The composition is balanced, with the oval frame providing a clear focus on the subject's face, while the architectural element of the pedestal grounds the image. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to translate painted portraiture into the medium of engraving, maintaining the dignity and gravitas expected of a ducal subject. The clarity of the lines and the controlled application of hatching create a sense of depth and volume, typical of the high-quality print production found in eighteenth-century German workshops.
